Reflections on California Supreme Court Amendments to the Law Office Study Program

California is one of the handful of states that allows individuals to qualify for the California bar exam by completing supervised legal education under an attorney or a judge instead of attending law school. By lowering traditional barriers and emphasizing hands-on experience, the Law Office Study Program helps build a more diverse legal community. It also ensures that future attorneys who learn under this model are well-equipped with the practical skills necessary to serve their clients effectively while still upholding the high standards of the legal industry. 

The California Supreme Court recently approved amendments that will modernize the rules and, more importantly, expand opportunities for the practical training of LOSP students. 

It’s good to see small shifts toward making the legal profession more accessible in California. This could provide more individuals the opportunity to bring their unique perspectives and dedication to the field while contributing toward the expansion of access to legal services in our communities.
